Christmas at Sea Charity Items Just About Done

Good grief!  I realized September is almost over and I had yet to post anything, so let me correct that oversight right now.

I have finally finished three pieces that I will be sending off to the Christmas at Sea charity I talked about in an earlier post  in June of this year. Has it been that long since I started the vest?  Yeah, I can believe it’s been that long.  One reason it took me so long was because I was working on Babette who consumed so much of my time and energy.  I haven’t sewn the side seams yet, but I’ll do that this week.

Knitted Seaman’s Vest

My almost-finished Christmas-at-Sea knitted Seaman’s vest.

Chanda, a windward Aloha Knitters’ sister, helped me remember how to do a decrease that would slant to the left (slip, slip, knit) that I had forgotten how to do.

The main problem I had knitting the vest was I got bored, because I had to knit close to 15″ straight of stockinette stitch for both front and back, and I really couldn’t wait to be done with it. If I ever do this vest again, I’ll use circular needles for the body.

Crocheted Scarf

The scarves went much more quickly.  I finished each in about a week.  All the patterns were fairly easy to make.

And I must say, I enjoyed doing the knit version of the scarf.

It was just complicated enough to keep me from getting bored, but not too complicated that I couldn’t watch TV while knitting.  And it went surprisingly fast, but I did work on it almost non-stop in the evening for eight days.

I’m not sure what I’ll work on next. Maybe I’ll do some more of those little freeform purses.  Then there’s Christmas coming up.  I’m pretty sure I’m going to focus on small projects this year and use yarn from my stash.

I've been crocheting for over 40 years and blogging since 2004 - two of my favorite things in the world to do besides walking the beaches of windward Oahu, Hawaii.

  • wow, you’ve been busy! can’t wait to see some freeform purses….

  • Hey Debbie! Yeah, I try to always have something to work on. I was with Aloha Knitters at the Honolulu Academy of Arts Sunday Family Day yesterday. The focus was textiles. We demonstrated knitting, crocheting and spinnig. Had fun, except I didn’t remember my camera until I was on the H-1, so I don’t have photos . Will try to get some and post.
